✂️ Remove Background
AI-powered background removal — 100% in your browser
✓ Free Forever · ✓ No Signup · ✓ No Upload · ✓ Works Offline
🔒 Your image never leaves your device. All processing happens locally in your browser using ONNX Runtime (WebAssembly) + IS-Net AI model. No upload, no server, no tracking.
Features
- AI-Powered Detection — Uses IS-Net, an open-source neural network trained to separate a subject from its background, so fine edges like hair and fur survive.
- Runs on Your Own Device — The model runs on your processor through WebAssembly, so it works the same in every modern browser — no graphics card or special browser required.
- Zero Upload — The AI model downloads once and runs entirely in your browser. Your photos never touch a server.
- Transparent PNG Output — Outputs a clean PNG with transparent background, ready for use in designs, presentations, or e-commerce.
How It Works
- Drop your image — Drag and drop or click to select any JPG, PNG, or WebP image.
- AI processes locally — The neural network analyzes your image and separates the subject from the background — all in your browser.
- Download result — Get a clean PNG with transparent background. No watermarks, no limits.
Use Cases
- E-commerce product photos with clean white backgrounds
- Profile pictures and headshots for social media
- Design assets — isolate subjects for compositing
- Documents and presentations with transparent logos
- Creative photo editing and collage making
- App icons and thumbnails with transparent backgrounds
Frequently Asked Questions
How accurate is the background removal?
It uses IS-Net (through the open-source @imgly/background-removal library), a segmentation model trained specifically to pull foreground objects out of a photo. It handles hair, fur and soft edges well on clear portraits and product shots; busy or low-contrast backgrounds are harder, and paid services like remove.bg can still do better on tricky photos.
Is my image uploaded to a server?
No. The AI model is downloaded to your browser on first use (about 100MB, cached afterwards). All processing happens locally on your device. Your images never leave your computer.
Why is the first run slow?
The first time you use this tool, the AI model needs to download (~100MB). It's cached in your browser after that, so later runs skip the download and start in seconds.
What browsers are supported?
Any modern browser — Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari, on desktop or phone. The model runs through WebAssembly on your CPU, so it doesn't need WebGPU or a graphics card; a faster processor simply means a faster cut-out.
Is there a file size limit?
There's no hard limit. The AI looks at a scaled-down copy of your photo and the cut-out is then applied at full resolution, so huge images mostly cost memory rather than time. On phones, photos under about 4000px are the safest bet.
Notes from Milo 🐨
The AI model behind this tool used to come from one place only: IMG.LY's own server. If that server was slow or blocked where you are, the tool just stopped — and worse, the progress bar vanished and left you staring at a blank page. Now I host the model on toolkoala.com myself (IMG.LY's server is only the backup), and if it really can't load, the page says so and gives you a way to try again. It's about 100 MB the first time, then your browser keeps it.
